It was a windy, sunny day on Saturday, Nov. 10, as Penn Charter and Germantown Academy teed it up for the 132nd time in their ancient rivalry. The game was close in the first half, as each team had trouble getting its offense untracked. Penn Charter broke through in the second quarter with a touchdown, then, in what was probably the key play of the game, scored in the last minute of the first half to make the halftime score 14 - 0. On the first play from scrimmage in the second half Edward Saydee took it 86 yards for another Charter score, and the rout was on. Saydee would score four touchdowns in a 41 - 14 lopsided victory for Penn Charter.
Prior to the game, we were treated to a catered lunch hosted by each school, and free salted pretzels. Also, each school offers free buttons, mini footballs, pom-poms, and cow bells to their supporters. The football game is really part of the annual PC - GA Day: there are girls and boys competitions in water polo, field hockey, golf, soccer, cross country, and tennis. So, it is best to come early and enjoy the competition. This year's competitions took place at Germantown Academy, and the location, atmosphere, and fans were great. Even as outsiders, we were treated as part of the family.
Post-game festivities were held at MaGerk's on Bethlehem Pike. The place was packed, but we found two unoccupied tables...right where the food was delivered. And it was good!! Free breaded chicken slices, pigs in a blanket, and roast beef tacos. To be washed down with a couple of cold ones...excellent!! As usual, we met some people, and made some new friends; I even taught two boys to say, "Down goes Frazier", whenever someone takes a spill.
The game is a wonderful experience for those of you having children or grandchildren. I brought my granddaughters two years ago, and they still talk about the great time they had. But all is not lost - next years game, the 133rd, will be held at Penn Charter. We hope to see you there.
Free Ski Lessons
This winter's ski lesson program will again take place at Spring Mountain, and there will be 3 nights of lessons: January 7, 14, 28, 2019. (We skip MLK Monday.)
If there is an evening where lessons cannot take place (for example, should Spring be closed for bad weather), there will be a make-up night held on Monday, February 4th. However, as long as Spring is open, we WILL have lessons. Lessons start promptly at 6:30pm, and a registration table in the main lobby will be manned from 5-7pm each night.
Participants MUST be a current member of an EPSC-affiliated club and show their membership card on their first night of attendance. A completed registration form is required; blank forms will be available each night, but things will go faster if participants can have one filled out ahead of time and bring it along. (Available to download and print on EPSC website.) Lessons are available for never evers, novice and intermediate skiers. Attend just one night, or all three.
